Understanding Kenya Vehicle Import Taxes (2026 KRA Formula)

1. Custom Value (CRSP Depreciation)

KRA calculates tax based on the Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) in Kenya minus age depreciation (up to 70% depreciation for 7–8 year old vehicles).

2. Import Duty (35%)

Standard East African Community (EAC) Common External Tariff applied to the Customs Value (CIF).

3. Excise Duty (20% to 35%)

20% for passenger vehicles under 1500cc; 25% for 1501–2500cc; 35% for high-displacement luxury SUVs over 2500cc.

4. Value Added Tax (16% VAT)

Charged on the sum of (Customs Value + Import Duty + Excise Duty).

5. Regulatory Levies (IDF & RDL)

Import Declaration Fee (IDF) of 2.5% and Railway Development Levy (RDL) of 1.5% applied to the Customs Value.

6. 8-Year Age Limit Rule

Vehicles must have been manufactured in 2019 or later to be eligible for registration in Kenya during 2026.
